Category D award winner – Denise Grant

The sign at Land's EndDenise Grant was able to visit museums, castles, cafés and shops while she waited for husband Phillip to complete his daily ride on his end-to-end journey.

Their trip was essentially a holiday, and was designed to keep them both happy.

She likes car holidays so agreed to drive the car while Phillip enjoyed the ride on a bike and could stop to look and photograph whenever he felt like it.

As the trip was purely for pleasure, the couple did not raise any money but looked at the journey as a chance to explore the UK after retiring from their teaching jobs in Australia.

The far ranging couple, who now live in Germany, carried the 40th Anniversary flag of their school in Düsseldorf.
After getting a little lost on Dartmoor - and again in Bristol, and getting stuck into a few local ales en route, they lost a little time but still made it to John O’ Groats in 15 days.

Phillip fell off his bike once in a gutter in Shipham, and avoided injury a second time when he was side-swiped by a white van on a roundabout north of Kendal.

He also says “as a final indignity” at the end of the road, he was forced to re-do his finish, as Denise’s cameras weren’t rolling to capture his glory. He didn’t mind however as he fondly recalls the final descent to John O’ Groats, “It is a magnificent way to finish!”
