Category Award B applicant The Lycra Lads went by the group name of “The Lycra Lads” for their north-south ride in August 2008.The start was good, in fine sunshine and aided by a tail wind, though they soon encountered a stiff southerly wind. Then they almost picked up another team member when a stowaway cat hopped into Jacquie’s car from their night stop at Carbisdale Castle and had to be returned. They lost their provisions one day too when the car’s boot opened spilling goods onto a busy roundabout. The support vehicle was apparently absent when Steve was forced to rebuild his rear wheel on the side of the road in the Scottish highlands. The lads say Jacquie was on a shopping trip at the time. Avoiding the main roads meant they also avoided a good deal of traffic and although they went on some of the most scenic roads across the UK, they often proved to be the hilliest. The team, two Englishmen and two Scots, were more than once tempted by the many distilleries across Scotland but persevered into the southerly breeze. Many a hill presented a challenge and with heavy clouds and downpours, the views of the Lake District came at a price. By the time they hit Dartmoor, they were suffering. More hills and more wind coupled with thick fog made for bleak going. Some 10 days 6 hours and 1,012 miles after they started, and a huge list of food and drink later, they arrived at Land’s End to celebrate their efforts. The team collected over £9000 in sponsorships for Macmillan Cancer Support and the Edinburgh Sick Kids’ Hospice. Updated: 26th July 2010 |
