Award category B runner up Bob Paterson who was tragically killed at age 13 in a car accident whilst on holiday with his mum and brother in Italy in 2005. Bob feels Dale could have been saved had he been wearing his seat belt correctly.Bob and his colleagues from Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service wanted to turn this tragedy into doing something positive by cycling from End to End to promote seatbelt safety. They began their journey at Land’s End on 1st June 2007 and 18 days and 1020 miles later arrived at John O’ Groats. The team went via their home county of Oxfordshire and their trip was broken down into 3 stages to enable 3 different support teams to help. Five of the cyclists, including Bob, completed the whole journey, and other guests joined them en-route. Bob and his team visited schools on their route to talk about seatbelt safety and to show the DVD ‘Losing Dale’ made by Dale’s school friends from John Mason School in Abingdon. The team raised a grand total of £25,000 for The Firefighters’ Charity and were acknowledged by a national award from the charity at the annual awards ceremony at Wembley stadium in 2008. There was great support from ASDA who allowed the team to campaign outside their stores throughout the country where they were joined by members of local brigades to raise funds. Road safety teams were also on hand to arrange media coverage to promote the message. It was a truly awesome experience for all those that took part and one that made Bob very proud of his team. He too hoped it would make his son Dale proud of him, watching from above. Updated: 26th July 2010 |
