Award category A applicants Roy & Judith Evison

ClubThat was not the case for retired husband and wife team Dr Roy and Judith Evison from Chorley in Lancashire, who were to attempt an unusual style of travel with their journey.
Roy had already decided on running the length of the country to raise money and promote awareness for Cancer following the loss of his sister to the disease in 2005. As a keen runner he thought it the obvious choice for his attempt.
It was when Judith surprised Roy, and decided to join forces in a walking capacity, that the problem of direction occurred. So they came up with an ingenious routine that involved a campervan, a car and remembering who had the keys.
Judith would drop Roy at the start point each day, where he would start running. She would then drive to Roy’s finish point and start walking back to where he had started to be later collected by Roy.
Fortunately the plan worked, they exchanged the keys as they passed on the route every day, except on one occasion when they forgot and a lot of running around was the outcome.
They moved, eventually, north to south, taking a week’s rest at home after every two weeks on the road. They got to within just two miles of the finish at Land’s End on 27th July but because friends and family wanted to come and see them cross the line, it was not until Sunday 24th August that they were able to gather and complete the task. Needless to say there were a lot of celebrations that Bank Holiday weekend.
Roy and Judith relished the challenge and felt privileged to have had the opportunity to undertake such a journey and succeed.
Their hard work raised £10,000 for Cancer Research UK.
