Award category A runner up Jane Allen As a member of the Royal Naval Reserves she had been mobilised from her civilian job as an IT project manager. She had seen Baghdad in the darkest and bloodiest months and during her operational leave in early 2007 had time to reflect. It had always been an ambition of Jane’s, who is from Ashburton in Devon, to walk from John O’ Groats to Land’s End, and she decided that that summer would be a perfect opportunity to achieve her ambition and to raise money for The Royal British Legion. The following few months were spent eagerly preparing for the trip and raising support. On April 13th she set out from the top of Scotland in glorious sunshine. She soon wondered though if the Friday the 13th start was a rash decision, a delivery of maps was way laid and she encountered frequent logistical nightmares. Jane’s husband Frank provided all her support on the journey in the form of driver, cook, cleaner, organiser and friend. His help was fundamental to Jane’s achievement. The weather was a major blow for the walker, especially after she reached the Cotswold way, the South-West of the country proving a long slog through rain, wind and overgrown footpaths. As well as friendly supporters and over defensive health and safety officials along the way slowing down her progress, Jane arrived at Lands End on July 13th completing the walk in a non superstitious 13 weeks. She walked 1,000 miles raising £10,500 for The Poppy Appeal. Updated: 26th July 2010 |
